Prick Up Your Ears: Datarock

It's been awhile since we shared our unsolicited and entirely uneducated thoughts on music (I think it was back somewhere around, oh, Burt Bacharach?), but when a band like Datarock comes along it's time to listen up.

The Norwegian disco/pop/funk duo apparently aren't gay, but they do love playing with gender roles and gay themes and do so in several songs. For example, in "Computer Camp Love" (kind of an homage to "Summer Night" from Grease) one notes, "she's not that kind of a girl", and the chorus responds, "does she have a penis?"

In the bouncy "Princess", they note, "You're a princess! You got the ass of a prince, you got a prince of an ass!" Menawhile, in "Ugly Primadonna" the fellas sing about how they had an illicit love affair with E.T.

In "Sex Me Up" they claim, "I'm into S&M, I'm neither butch or femme, and now don't you understand, I'm into any man." Then there's "Night Flight to Uranus," which ... well, I'll just leave that one be.

Goofy stuff, to be sure -- but they're having so much fun with it that they pull it off. Thanks go to my boyfriend for getting this crap stuck on infinite loop in my already overtaxed little mind -- "Summer Lovin'", indeed.

Check out the videos for their single, "Fa Fa Fa", and "Computer Camp Love" below.

  • Prick Up Your Ears: Shortbus's Jay Brannan

If you saw Shortbus, I'm sure the thing that you remember most about it is the music. Okay, maybe on the fifth watch, after the exact measurements of Paul Dawson were wallpapered permanently onto your retinas.

But the music of the film is really gorgeous, and much of it stems organically from the performers themselves, including the incredibly talented Jay Brannan. Jay plays the precocious-but-lovable young Ceth in the film (the potential third to the main gay couple, played by Dawson and PJ DeBoy), and there's a moment when he picks up a guitar and performs a short song that's quite impressive.

Turns out the guy is a serious musician, and has his first video (for his song "Body's a Temple") up on YouTube for us to enjoy. Check it out!
