World of Wonder

Sundance Gay Film Dispatch 2: Mysteries of Pittsburgh, Rex Lee, and a Taxi zum Xanax

World of Wonder's Fenton Bailey and Frameline's Michael Lumpkin

World of Wonder's Fenton Bailey and Frameline's Michael Lumpkin

In Park City, Albertsons’ supermarket is the great leveler: stars and plebeians alike, without braving guest lists, swing by and mix it up. My cashier had spotted Jessica Alba and Patrick Stewart amongst others coming through.

There was certainly no shortage of food at Sunday’s Outfest Queer Brunch, which was presented by here! Networks. Expected guest Paris Hilton was a no-show (“she slept in,” I was told – but she did manage to show up at Regent’s party for upcoming release The Hottie and the Nottie, in which she stars, later that eve), but the place was hoppin’ with schmooze, friends, and some disco dancing. Oh – and a brief bite of politics regarding the importance of digitizing queer film and ensuring its permanent survival.

The altitude isn’t the only thing high around here. World of Wonder’s Fenton Bailey and I shared a taxi cab driven by Park City’s most Zen-y drug dealer. After offering us bottles of V8, he very politely asked us if we needed “party favors.” Then he elaborated on what’s on tap, interjecting compliments like, “You guys have positive energy! You’re shining stars!” I was also running late to the Queer Lounge. Oh, he had some other things to offer as well. “If you want I can bring some of my friends, young, beautiful, pure.” As a parting gift, he handed me a Xanax. Fenton was lucky enough to stay in the taxi and head to a second stop, an even longer trip (so to speak) riddled with wrong turns, during which our new friend revealed he was a trauma nurse! Alas, Fenton was way, way late by the time he arrived at his destination to meet WOW partner Randy Barbato, whose energy was not exactly positive by then. They didn’t get Xanax swag, either!

Entourage's Rex LeeAh, swag take two. Rex Lee has been making out quite well. He even had himself a facial at the lovely, art-filled St. Ives Sensory Spa & Gallery. “I enjoy facials,” he later told me. “I love being pampered!” And I love the new moisturizing cleansers I managed to take away (this mountain air is drying!).

I ran into Lee at the Queer Lounge’s panel (moderated by The Advocate’s fabulous Anne Stockwell) for HBO’s upcoming WOW production, “When I Knew,” which will air this June. GLBTQ guests could record their own accounts of that pivotal revelation in a QL booth, which will later appear online (as well as accounts shot for the production).

A few queer interest films have been screened over the past couple of days. Sunshine Cleaning, about a couple of sisters who start a crime scene cleanup company, had a lesbian character in Mary Lynn Rajskub (24, Mysterious Skin), but its allegedly filmed lesbian kiss – between Rajskub and Emily Blunt - had been snipped.

Mysteries of Pittsburgh also had quite a lot of its queer content removed, at least from its Michael Chabon source novel. Peter Sarsgaard plays bi again. As for the mystery? It’s a snoozer!

John Hurt as Quentin Crisp in The Naked Civil Servant

In a continued effort to bring you all that is important in the world of gay entertainment and ensure that you are being spoon-fed images of gorgeous, commoditized manflesh, we present the newly-minted AfterElton Briefs. Following the usual assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • In conjunction with their Andy Warhol: Dead at 25 art exhibit, the scamps at World of Wonder have put up a charming tribute to Factory girl and cult film icon Mary Woronov, who will be appearing in person at tonight's opening party. (This may be the first time I've ever wished I lived in L.A.)
Jason Lewis (with Matthew Rhys in Brothers & Sisters)
  • A pic of Jason Lewis's mudflap has leaked from the set of the Sex and the City movie ... not that anyone here would be interested in such a thing.
  • Don't forget to read all about the new gay indie pic Shelter (among other things) in Michael's piping-hot Best.Gay.Week.Ever! column, and we'll see you Monday morning! (Your turn to bring the donuts, mkay?)

Radar's "New Radicals" include the queer and queer-friendly

Provocative pop culture magazine Radar has assembled a list of "The New Radicals" naming "the year's most notable rogues, renegades, and rule-breakers" who've challenged the status quo and worked to keep the pop culture landscape from becoming a bland wasteland.

Gay fave Kathy Griffin starts their list for her now-legendary Emmy acceptance speech, a controversy Griffin attributes to "the dumbing down of America." (Eh, I attribute it to the dumbing down of the media.) In the brief profile, Griffin notes that her "D-List" status allows her to get enough of the a peek into the world of celebrity to give it the thorough mocking that her fans love.

Transgender actress Candis Cayne wraps up the list. Radar notes that Cayne almost gave up on acting after undergoing gender reassignment surgery. Thankfully that didn't happen, as Cayne's role as Carmelita on Dirty Sexy Money is groundbreaking: it's the first time a major-network show has given a regular transgender role to a transgender performer.

Cayne's pitching a comedy project that would follow a fictionalized version of her real life (think So NoTorious or Curb Your Enthusiasm) with husband Marco McDermott and his six-year-old daughter. I'd love to see that.

As part of a quartet of black bloggers who are challenging how the media covers African-American issues, Rod McCullom gets honors by Radar. If you haven't checked out McCullom's blog, Rod 2.0, from out blogroll, be sure to check his great coverage of gay issues.

Radar also praises World of Wonder, the "camp provocateurs" who've given us some great entertainment in film and television. You might know World of Wonder from their documentaries about Tammy Faye Messner, The Eyes of Tammy Faye and Tammy Faye: Death Defying or their follow-up reality series, One Punk Under God, which followed Jay Bakker's gay-friendly ministry. Gay audiences might also know WoW from the Oxygen series, Tori and Dean: Inn Love, as well as the documentary and film Party Monster.

Congratulations to all the honorees for some well-deserved kudos! They're all pretty deserving to be better known by audiences.

In memory of Tammy Faye Messner

Tammy Faye Messner, shortly after making a moving appearance on Larry King Live, passed away on Friday after a long struggle with inoperable cancer.

In memory of Messner, who was one of the earliest and most outspoken supporters of gays and lesbians in the Christian evangelical movement, the folks at World of Wonder (who produced the wonderful Eyes of Tammy Faye documentary) are hosting over a dozen clips featuring some of Tammy's greatest moments. Check out a few below.

Tammy Faye on The RuPaul Show

Jim J Bullock set to become a Beauty School Dropout

The last time I saw Jim J. Bullock (wait a second, was there always an 'i' in his name?) he was reuniting with his former talk show co-host in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, a documentary from openly gay producers Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato. According to Variety, Bullock is set to appear in another production by Bailey and Barbato's production company, World of Wonder -- this time, in a reality series.

In "Beauty School Dropout" Bullock will attend beauty school and attempt to open a beauty parlor. The series is currently a pilot being pitched to cable networks and I'm hoping I'll get to see it on my cable grid in the near future. I usually enjoy World of Wonder's shows, and Bailey and Barbato are keen at finding interesting people who've been overlooked by lesser storytellers. In that light, "Beauty School Dropout" is a promising combination.

Another show being developed by World of Wonder focuses on Jeffree Star, a cross-dressing singer who will be opening for Cyndi Lauper's summer tour. Poking around Star's MySpace page, it's hard to imagine such a show ever getting boring.

For you Jim J. fans (or Jm J. fans), here's a funny clip of him on the However-Many-Thousand-Dollar Pyramid (second clip in the video) in which he doesn't exactly use his alloted time wisely.
