This may not have been the most exciting Broadway season in history, but it might have been the gayest. The gay-themed musical The Drowsy Chaperone followed close on its heels with five awards, including best book for a musical, best original score, best performance by a featured (supporting) actress for Beth Leavel, and awards for scenic and costume design.

Out gay director John Doyle won for his groundbreaking revival of out gay composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd. In his acceptance speech, Doyle thanked “my partner, Robert, who helps me with everything. Happy anniversary, Rob.”

Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon, who is in a relationship with a woman, won best actress in a play for her portrayal of a mother suffering the accidental death of her child in Rabbit Hole. She was shown on camera kissing partner Christine Marinoni after the award was announced.
