AfterElton's Trending Topics: Vampires We Would Turn For

The MTV movie recently awards showed a heavily-hyped preview of Breaking Dawn, HBO is releasing PSA videos for True Blood Withdrawal, and Colin Farrell is looking aptly hot in those Fright Night ads. And that's just the stuff that's currently going on. The rest of the year there's The Vampire Diaries, two versions of Being Human and more.

Of course, this all led to the big topic of conversation around the AfterElton employee break room this week, "Which vampire would you turn for?" No, not turn straight or gay. Turn into the undead...

The responses approached the question in different ways. Some based their pick on personality, some on style, while others chose their maser vampire based on ... esoteric reasons.

But we don't want to just hear from the AE writers, who have spent way too much time looking for new ways to cover that preview of the upcoming True Blood season. We'd also love to hear from our readers. So in the comments tell us which vampire you would turn for.

This is a tough one, because there have definitely been a wealth of vampire hotties over the years ... and I'm talking LOOOOOONG before Edward Cullen showed up with his bird chest and stupid hair. For me this is a toss-up between two Anne Rice vamps: Louis (as played by Brad Pitt) and Lestat (as played not by Tom Cruise, but Stuart Townsend in Queen of the Damned. Awful movie, gorgeous lead.)

Ultimately I like a brooding, sensitive guy over a jerkwad, so I'm going with Louis.

Hmm, the question for me would be less "Who would I let turn me?" rather than, "Would I want to live forever, especially if I had to kill people?" Well, the "killing people" part always made the answer no, but now that we have all kinds of "good" vampires (who are suddenly straight, natch) and who drink TruBlood or snack on wildlife, the question once again bears pondering.

Frankly, the idea of being immortal doesn't appeal all that much to me. Outliving all your friends? Worrying about global climate change making the world unlivable even if you can't die? Being around when they reboot the Transformer franchise for the tenth time? Ugh, ugh and ugh. However, dying is just about as unappealing. So for the sake of argument, I'll go ahead and say, I would be willing to be turned. So who would get the honor of, um, doing me?

I'm not really a fan of bad boys so that rules a lot of folks like Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Damon from The Vampire Diaries. I prefer the vampires who want to fight their essential nature and get along with humanity. Think Angel from Buffy or Godric and Bill from True Blood. But given the fact that I've also got a horrible sweettooth, there is really one vampire who is perfectly suited to turn me.

Count Chocula of course!

I'm not what you'd call a vampire romantic, so my answer turns on practical considerations. Which vampire sire could offer me the best mix of super-powers (strength, speed, stealth, turning into a bat at will, etc.) coupled with the fewest vulnerabilities? I mean, I'm basically a morning person, so I don't fancy spending all my days stuck in a coffin filled with dirt.

So with that in mind, I'm ruling out any vampire from the Buffy universe. Those guys have a raw deal what with being vulnerable to sunlight and dealing with a badass Slayer. Also, with the special exceptions of hotties Spike and Angel (either of whom I might be tempted to cough up a little blood for), vampires in Sunnydale have all lost their souls. No thanks.

The bloodsuckers from CW's The Vampire Diaries have a somewhat better deal: souls intact and it seems like enchanted amulets to protect you from sunlight are remarkably easy to come by.  Also, they can see themselves in mirrors — those Salvatore boys obviously primp a lot. But even so, the mortality rate for vampires in Mystic Falls is disturbingly high. Which sorta defeats the whole purpose of immortality.

I'll also take a pass on the True Blood contingency. Too darn muggy in Louisiana for my tastes.

That leaves us with the vampires of Twilight. Seems like they have the best deal: speed, strength, bonus superpowers like mind-reading or fortune-telling. Also, they can go without human blood, they still have their souls and they're all bright and glittery in the sunlight.

Sold! And I totally choose Emmett Cullen (Kellan Lutz) to turn me out.... providing he gets a new haircut and a better dye job.

Emmett Cullen
