Trendy Gay Hipster: Hurray For The Male Celebrity Fashionista!

As I was recently getting ready for a relaxing evening, drinking a tall glass of grape soda Merlot and snacking on some jumbo cheese curls nutritious snacks, preparing to watch RuPaul's Drag Race (no judgments please; besides drunken karaoke down in Chinatown, this is my kind of evening), I was looking through some entertainment magazines.

And I kept noticing how a lot of the male celebrities were dressed — fierce.

While some celebs decked their fine selves out in more traditional clean-cut suits, others were dressed in more fun, playful outfits. At that moment, it occurred to me that the Gods had finally answered my prayers! (Well, not all of them. I'm still waiting on my commemorative Kylie Minogue coaster set. Sigh.)

the guys in the magazines were having fun with their clothes! After all, why should female celebrities be the only ones able to enjoy fashion this way? Us boys should be invited to that party too!

To mark the happy occasion, I put together a short list of some of my favorite current male celebrity fashionistas that are defining “fierce.”

I remember not too long ago watching my future husband, the musician Lenny Kravitz, strutting the streets in high heeled, knee high boots, leather pants, and a dress-like top, topped off with a shoulder bag. “Finally!” I thought to myself. “A man with truly fierce taste!” (Um, marry me Lenny?)

With a style that not many men would dare to embrace and a body clothing to die for, Kravitz is a celebrity who inspires me when it comes to fashion. When he was on the Grammy's this past weekend, he sported a pair of sexy leather boots, accompanied by leather pants and an interesting take on the leather jacket: sleeveless, ripped, and lined with fur.

Just what was he defining himself as? Rock royalty.

Another celebrity to whom I can relate fashion-wise is Brad Pitt. For years he stood out thanks to his fashion sense — good, bad, and bearded. Besides the awards ceremony attire that I've seen him sport for many years, I've been in awe of his interpretation of the ‘rugged' look. I'm a sucker for a man who can work a fedora, a pair of shades, a loose fitted v-neck shirt, scarf, and jeans. That look never gets old — it’s the Benjamin Button of styles.

Although I'm not a huge admirer of this next celebrity, I must admit that the man knows how to dress! Musician Kanye West has shared his definition of current fashion with the world, particularly from the realm of hip-hop.

From his circus inspired jackets, to his simple cardigan look (had to include a cardigan shout out here), to high fashion runway attire, West has made fashion a staple of his music and his life. In fact, looking back at urban wear in hip-hop, fashion has definitely come a long way from the FUBU baggy shirts and jeans that were once (sadly) oh so very popular. (Okay, I have to admit that I had a pair of Phat Farm jeans as a teenager — a sad moment in my fashion history.)

Another celebrity that I consider to be a fashion inspiration is another musician – Andre 3000, one half of hip-hop duo Outkast. From his vibrant color schemes to his love of textures and pocket squares, Mr. 3000 makes vintage wear look modern and charming.

Last but not least, I have to include my favorite style from La Roux's Eleanor Kate Jackson. Okay, so she's not a he, but her masculine style is something every man can work. (Besides, she’s pretty androgynous, right?)

Yes, when it comes to men’s fashion, things have definitely taken a giant knee high boot step forward in a refreshingly fierce direction. So thanks Brad, Andre, Kanye, and Eleanor!

And especially you, Lenny!
