Trendy Gay Hipster: These (Gay) Boots Aren’t Just Made for Walkin’!

Whenever Mother Nature decides to spread a little sunshine around town, I take that opportunity to throw on my best boots and hit the streets like I own them. There’s nothing else I would rather do on a delightful brisk spring morning than to strut about in a nice pair of boots, all the while making a few heads turn in my direction.

Well actually, there’s also sipping on Mimosas, watching a marathon of Rupaul’s Drag Race, and having all-you-can-eat bacon. But I digress.

In my most humble of humble opinions, every man deserves to have a styling pair of boots. Whether for work or for play, a pair of boots conveys panache in whatever ensemble you’re rocking. And with most of us finally experiencing the nicer weather this time of year, it’s worth the while to show off a ravishing pair of boots with your spring apparel.

From casual to dressy, with just the right combination of styling and attitude, the perfect pair of boots can make any modern outfit into a very chic look. In fact, this year, boots are one of the must-haves to go along with your wardrobe.

But what kind of boots should you don? To go along with the current trend of vintage fashion in clothing, there are currently a few different styles of boots that are très popular among men.

One style that I personally enjoy is the basic ankle-high boot that either slip-on or include a side zipper. These types of boots are great for men who wear boots on a regular basis, but want a simple yet comfortable kind of footwear while still looking fashionable. Boots in this style look great in leather, especially brown leather.

Wearing a slimming pair of pants or jeans with these boots is sexy, especially if you include a blazer, jacket, or even a cardigan. Mixing vintage garments with ankle-high boots can transform your overall look to an edgier one.

But what really makes my heart go pitter-patter with excitement are knee-high boots. Yes, this style of boots does exist for men, if you’ve got the nerve. Wearing them just requires patience and great shopping sense.

With knee-high boots, it’s all about comfort. After all, you’re basically wrapping the majority of your legs in a burrito of leathery goodness, so you should definitely make sure they feel great on your feet. Keep in mind, for knee-high boots to fit well, you should wear a slim-fitted pair of pants, skinny jeans or whatever your legs feel more relaxed in, as this will help with the comfort level of your boots. Plus, it just looks better than squeezing into a loose pair of pants. Remember, you’re wearing a fashionable pair of boots, not making sausages.

There is an array of different styled knee-high boots to choose from, so don’t be afraid to explore when shopping. You may stumble upon a few styles such as Buccaneer, lace-ups, English riding boots, and even Converse knee-highs, which are quite trendy with the appropriate outfit.

Just remember the one rule I always try to preach: shop smart! Try not to buy a pair of boots just because they look cute or are in style this very second. Really buy what makes your feet tingle with joy, and make sure they’re comfortable. If you’re going to invest in some boots, you might as well buy a pair that aren’t going to be a pain in your tootsies.

If you want to shop for boots that won’t burn a hole in your wallet, you can find decently priced ones at stores like Macy’s or Marshalls. Personally, if I’m buying boots that I’m going to keep for a long time, I’m going to spend a little happy and buy some great quality boots for retail price. Retail stores like Aldo, which sells men’s boots starting at $59 and up, really make great quality, yet fierce boots.

Not really into shopping in stores? Online sites like Gilt.com have a great selection of top brand boots that are either half off the retail price or on clearance. Although many items on these sites are a bit pricey, you do find some amazing deals pretty often.

One store I highly recommend for both ankle-high and knee-high boots is John Fluevog, which makes exquisite shoes and boots. Fluevog may require a little digging into your piggy-bank, but their shoes are fantastic and last for years and are worth every penny.

Happy strutting!
