"One Life to Live" to be canceled, "Kish" to "All My Children"?
The world of daytime soaps which saw the loss this year of Guiding Light and will quite likely see the cancellation of As the World Turns next year, continues to be rocked by change and rumor. Nelson Branco is reporting that One Life to Live is likely to be canceled next year. In fact, Branco says an insider told him the show only barely escaped cancelation this year when ABC Daytime President Brian Frons had to choose between OLTL and a new daytime talk show. When the new talk show scored poorly with audiences, OLTL was given a temporary reprieve. The news isn't all bad for fans of Oliver Fish (Scott Evans) and Kyle Lewis (Brett Claywell) as Branco's insider says that Evans and Claywell, along with Trevor St. John, Kassie DePaiva and Michael Easton will likely jump over to ABC soap All My Children. No mention was made of the fate of OLTL's third gay character Nick Chavez (Nicholas Rodriguez). The addition of "Kish" to AMC would not be the first time the show has had gay or lesbian characters. Back in 2000, Bianca Montomgery (Eden Riegel) came out and over the next decade her character participated in a number of high profile storylines, not all of which were popular with lesbian viewers. Then in 2006, the show also added the character of Zoe/Zarf, daytime television's first transgender character. While still a man, Zarf fell in love with Bianca, another plotline many lesbian viewers disliked feeling it was a way to avoid Bianca's lesbianism. Branco offered no details on which of OLTL's creative team might also move to AMC so it's impossible to know how much screentime Oliver and Kyle might get or how the show would integrate them into AMC's current landscape. Given how much prominence the current Kish storyline has received on OLTL (as well as an upcoming storyline garnering much attention), it's hard to believe Kish would be as prominent on AMC. Damnit!
NOT FAIR!! Grrrrrr..
This the worst soap news ever!
When, if it supposed to happen, would it happen next year? Beginning, end?..
Weird thing to transfer actors/characters from one soap to the other, but if it means KISH can stay around even if OLTL doesn't, than hurray!... Or not.. If it means, KISH's story will be put on the backburner on AMC, then, I'd rather they wrap it up now on OLTL with a happy ending, of sorts.
Damnit!
well, hopefully if....
well, hopefully if they do move to AMC, the writers go along with them.
either way, it kind of sucks to be on soaps in this day and age. I wonder if GH will be cancelled anytime soon. I only watch for my favorite couple, but other than that, i think the show stinks like hell. I think all the teen storylines have screwed it up
Clarification RE OLTL and AMC
I just want to make sure I understand.
Is it the actors that are moving from OLTL or is it the actors AND the characters? And this would be in California, not New York?
I know characters have crossed over on soaps and other shows on the same network before but is this a new thing for One Life to Live and All My Children to have characters crossing between the two?
Do tell.
Crossovers
There have been lots of X-Overs between AMC and OLTL (And GH and Port Charles).
There have not only been characters, but storylines. According to Wikipedia, there was a storyline in which a woman looked for her long-lost child, her journey meandering across all four soaps.
And there was apparently a baby switch in which they switched babies BETWEEN SHOWS.
furthermore...
There have also been crossovers between AMC and Loving/The City, so there's a history of characters from one canceled ABC soap moving to another.
Side thought: there was talk of Otalia moving to ATWT that was rejected... if Kish moved, AMC would be the first soap to have a popular lesbian and gay male character, which a Nuke/Otalia ATWT would have been.
ABC Soaps
ABC owns all three of its soap operas. So it is perfectly within reason to think that any character on the three shows can cross over onto another show. As mentioned, back in 2006 or so there was baby switch storyline that transversed both OLTL and AMC. Even before that there was a maternity storyline that went across all (four at the tme) soaps on the network. GH's Skye Quatermaine was intro'd way back in the 80's as Skye Chandler who turned out to be the adoptive, not biological, daughter of Adam Chandler from AMC. Skye's adoptive mom was Rae Cummings (played by Linda Dano) who was a character on OLTL at the time. Rae crossed over to all four soaps in search of the baby she long ago gave up for adoption and found her in Port Charles (town where GH is based).
I really hope that OLTL being cancelled is just a rumor. From what I can tell the show is doing just about everything right. While that might not show in the ratings it is probably the best soap on ABC (though I don't watch AMC or GH to be able to properly compare and contrast). With AMC moving production to LA it is thought that the cast will be trimmed when some actors are let go and others don't make the move from NYC to LA. Let's hope that OLTL will be around for more than just another year.
Once upon a time I died. And like my namesake I got better.
Really?
GH would be the last...
GH would be the last soap to survive on ABC I think. The show is like a longtime tradition moreso than AMC and OLTL. It still is the network's highest rated soap I think.
Once upon a time I died. And like my namesake I got better.
ABC soaps' ratings
Through much of the summer, OLTL was ABC's #1 rated soap averaging a 1.8-1.9 rating; lately, it's been consistantly tying with GH for their #1 slot, and last week, both shows climbed to a 2.0 rating, both ranking at #4 (below #1 Y&R, #2 B&B and #3 Days of our Lives); conversely, AMC has consistantly been ABC's lowest rated soap this year (that AMC competes directly with Y&R and B&B in most markets doesn't help; whereas OLTL only competes with ATWT).
But you are right in one regard: ABC considers GH their flagship soap--it's their oldest (debuting in 1963) and the show that kicked off the soap phenomenon of the 1980s with the Luke & Laura storyline.
But that history is worth considering; GH was a basement-dwelling soap in 1978; producer Gloria Monty and headwriter Douglas Marland turned that around within 6 months, making it a top-rated soap. With producer Frank Valentini and headwriter Ron Carlivati at the helm of OLTL and the buzz the show is getting (thanks partly to being widely recognized as the best soap on the air and partly to Kish), it's possible that OLTL's rise in the ratings is likely to continue.
also..
Relocating Nuke
Honestly, the buzz has faded on Nuke so much that I'm not sure it would be worthwhile. I'm not the only one saying that right now, Nuke are the WORST part of ATWT. Not exactly appealing to other shows. Also, despite their shared P&G heritage, I think the relationships between ATWT and the other surviving CBS shows are a little more complex, and it might not be as easy to arrange that kind of permanent move. They are made by a different production studio, and I think ABC are part-owner of their shows, while CBS has no such relationship to smooth deals between their soaps.
But this is something Anthony could answer better.
One thing are the storylines and other different the characters
Yes, the storylines suck lately, and ATWT improved a lot more in other areas than Nuke, but the truth is that they are one of the most popular characters of daytime (if they are so popular with such a bad storylines, they could be even more popular with good ones).
But there are a lot of problems with relocating Nuke to other soap. B&B has no gay character even when is base in the fashion world, and Y&R failed miserable when introduced their own gay characters, so i don't think it would be worthy the relocating. And i'm not sure if the actors will be really interested in this either.
IT's curious becaise i think OLTL writers could give Nuke great storylines, but of course, this will never happen because they have their own gay characters (and we know that some straights get mad when there are more than two gay characters) and because OLTL is right now almost in the same position than ATWT.
CBS Soaps
CBS does not own any of the soaps it broadcasts. So the likeliehood of seeing any characters cross from ATWT to either B&B or Y&R in the event is pretty non existent. The reason B&B and Y&R characters cross from one show to another is that they are sister soaps created by William J. Bell and owned by Sony. If and when ATWT is cancelled that is the end of any of those characters IMO. There have been some cases where characters from the Sony shows have crossed paths with Procter & Gamble shows (ATWT & GL). Allison from ATWT and Amber from B&B/Y&R were friends when both were in Las Vegas (off canvas) for a time. Allison helped Amber pull of marrying Cane (by standing in for him) in Las Vegas before Allison found her way back to Oakdale in 2006/2007. They had online chronicles of their backstory on CBS.com. Also, Michael Baldwin from Y&R crossed over to ATWT to be someone's lawyer a few years back.
Once upon a time I died. And like my namesake I got better.
Shame!
The character moves makes sense....
Oliver and Kyle are new and bring a small fan base with them to boost AMC.
And Blair and Todd have been bringing in the dough forever for the last 15 years its seems. Interesting to TBTD?!
Vicki and Dorian ARE OLTL so it wouldn't make sense to bring them.
OLTL though is so much better!
------------------------------------------------------------
If I bring out the devil in you, he was there all along!
The move makes sense...
...from a ratings perspective, but I'm not sure the essence of the characters (especially Todd and Blair) would translate well away from the OLTL environment.
And as much as I enjoy the idea of The Guppy, if they would have to take it with them and become full-time parents, that would suck. Hopefully Stacey could steal the baby and run away.
No grown-up Matthew Buchanan? No more David Vickers, The Man or The Dog?
At least in the case of Dorian, Blair would provide opportunity for guest appearances. They'd have to work pretty hard to bring Viki over.
NOOOOOOOOO....
<gasp>
...OOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Without the brilliant, witty, OTT plotlines and overall style of OLTL, Kish just wouldn't be the same. And Todd and Blair without Tea? Bite your tongue!
The only time I ever tried to watch AMC, I recorded one of the weekend marathons from Soapnet. I turned it off about halfway through when I realized I'd watched over two episodes and couldn't recall literally anything about the plots.
I suppose I'd make the switch and give it a chance out of loyalty to the actors, but I'd rather follow them loyally to something I actually believed I might enjoy.
Feh. I have to go watch OLTL now.
This has no sense for me
AMC has almost the same ratings than OLTL and worse reviews, so i don't understand why they choose OLTL to be axed.
It sucks that the only two soaps with gay storylines are surrounded by cancelation rumours. Even in the case of ATWT, it will be far more difficult to justified the cancellation that GL. GL was the last in the ratings far from the rest. ATWT right now has similar ratings than OLTL and AMC and it's not too far from GH.
I hope that at least they give the soaps a proper time to try to get better ratings
i was just telling my dad that.....
i was just telling my dad that maybe to help ratings, soaps should only be aired at night. nobody is home during the days anymore like they use to be.
it'd be like in the 50's when TV first came out, you could only turn the tv on certain times of the day to watch shows. hell, i think showing tv shows on during the day is plain dumb. as i said, nobody is home nowadays during the day. oh well. thats the way it is i guess.
I think...
The networks should try to find a way for online fans to get a customized version of the show with only their favorite characters (or, to put it another way, they should be putting out their own Nuke/Otalia/Kish video collections) like maybe a online viewer that had every scene tagged with the characters that appear. This would help address how one segment of the audience watches soaps and, hopefully, give the networks a way to make money off of them. (As a bonus, this would encourage writers to have characters interact more to get people interested in the rest of the show.)
Then again, I wonder why no one has looked at the online video collections and thought of making a DVD collection of just those storylines. Similarly, while I'm no fan of product placement, I'm surprised I don't see Nuke regularly talking about their favorite breakfast cereal since those are ads video-sharing fans won't cut.
I'm not sure...
edited clips really have mass-market appeal. I'm sure all of us have experienced the frustration of plots that vanish without resolution, or that disappear and come back and you've clearly missed a lot that was important. (One clip, Lily murdered Dusty. Then the story vanishes. Then Dusty is alive. WTF?)
Obviously, a lot of us are dedicated enough to stick with them anyway, but I'm not sure a large, long-term audience could really be built for those mangled storylines. It would be inexpensive to try, so I suppose they could give it whirl and see what happens.
I'm wondering how much of that dedicated fan base could be lured to cable, where numbers function in an entirely different scale. I like Liz's evening idea, but the shows as they are would be crushed by primetime production values, and upgrading to better PVs and maintaining these HUGE casts would be an expense nightmare. So I wonder if, say, Soapnet were to choose two or three and take them over as a nightly block, with cable's production values, cast salaries, and ratings expectations, if they'd be able to pull over enough to survive.
Of course, they'd also have to arrest the ratings free-fall. If it doesn't stop, it will eventually drop below what's healthy for ANY given paradigm.
I think...

Not freaking out yet
Hmm, well I'll wait until that "likely" is gone before I worry too much. I know the state of soaps in general and OLTL in particular is such that this is a very real possibility, but for now I'll deal with the realities and still hope for the best. I find AMC so much less entertaining, and already pretty crowded...so my fingers are crossed OLTL gets another reprieve next year.
Especially since they're theoretically investing the time and effort to move the show to AMC's old studios in January.
Hold your horses
Hold your horses everybody...
This is NELSON BRANCO reporting this. He's not exactly above using his position to rally the troops. He LOVES OLTL (and I can't blame him) but there's a few holes in this theory big enough to drive a tank through.
First of all, the idea, the very IDEA, that AMC would consider taking on the characters of Fish and Kyle is ludicrous. AMC's head writer, Chuck Pratt, isn't interested in writing for gay characters. His mangled attempts at a lesbian love story speak for themselves. Secondly, Scott Evans isn't even on CONTRACT at OLTL... if the characters were as much in demand as Nelson wishes they were, OLTL would put him on contract.
There's some mileage in the theory that ABC sees AMC and GH as more "marquee" soaps. AMC has Erica Kane and GH is, well, GH. Both of those shows have SOME measure of pop culture presence, whereas OLTL doesn't. But the beancounters at ABC aren't likely to forget that OLTL has a better demo, comes in CONSISTENTLY under budget and has fewer big $$$ stars (especially if Brian Frons successfully lures Rebecca Budig, Eden Riegel and others back to AMC once they move to L.A.)
I'm just saying, take this with a grain of salt. Nelson Branco IS the Perez Hilton of soap "journalism" so take that for what it's worth.
Has Branco ever actually seen AMC??
As zanefan says, there's no way Pratt will write for gay men. And why would they move a recurring actor like Scott Evans? He could be dumped at any time.
Why would Kassie dePaiva move to AMC when they have dumped all actresses in her age range, minus Susan Lucci (who is the show's figurehead)?
Wait but ATWT hasn't stopped
In fact, no
The rumours are surrounding for a long time, but acording to Nelson Branco, they have at least a six month quite time before things getting serious (but there are rumours about being cancelled in december). I think cancelled ATWT is not that easy than cancelled GL, ATWT has pretty similar ratings than other soaps, and at least the program that substitued GL will be a big success, i don't think CBS or P&G rushed ATWT cancellation (right now they are doing better in ratings and viewers than a month ago).
OLTL is in a preety similar position at the ratings, but the surrounding seem to be different. P&G seems to want to get out of soaps, and this is the first risk to ATWT, but it seems that OLTL is the less prefered soap to brian fons, so if he'll has to choose what ABC soap will be axed is pretty sure that it'll be OLTL, at least that they'll get better ratings than AMC and GH. If OLTL has higher rankings than the other ABC soaps, and ATWT avoids the lastest positions on the ranking, maybe they could be saved
Not likely to happen...
I've been watching AMC for 25 years, and OLTL for about 5 or 6 years. AMC is the worst it's ever been, and with the entire production moving to LA in January, they'll be losing those actors who don't want to switch coasts. It doesn't seem likely that a few of the OLTL actors would also want to relocate their lives and their families to LA, in hopes that AMC will continue past the next couple of years.
The writing and acting on OLTL is SO much better than AMC right now, it's sad to think that it may be cancelled, while AMC continues on its misguided path. The latest offense by AMC is the firing of gorgeous hunk Aiden Turner, who was the main reason I've been tuning in for the last few years. I believe that after AMC's move to LA, they will lose more viewers and eventually be cancelled, hopefully allowing ABC to keep OLTL and KISH on the air.
I Wouldn't.....
Thank you ...
One Life To Live Goes Off The Air Tomorrow?
DAYS had a similar story but it turned out ok for now
Grains of Salt
I usually take Branco with a grain of salt but Jamey Giddens over at Daytime Confidential has been saying much the same thing for a while now and his reporting is, generally, on the up and up. Giddens did not, however, get into the specifics of who Frons would save by crossing them over.
My optimism is based on the fact that we haven't yet heard definitively about who from the AMC cast is going to make the move (or become bicoastal) once the show moves to LA. I think the show's going to lose a ton of viewers and it'll be difficult for Frons to play favorites in the face of all of that.
That said, if the rumors of OLTL's demise are true, I can't imagine:
1. Susan Haskell not going over to AMC. It seems HIGHLY improbable to me that, if AMC were looking to keep Thorsten Kaye, they wouldn't be seriously about him bringing his wife along.
2. Kyle and Oliver moving to Pine Valley. I just can't imagine bringing in these two characters when the writing team at AMC has been unwilling to write well for the most beloved gay/lesbian character ever in daytime, Bianca Montgomery. I'm sorry but I have to call BS on that one...there's no way that's happening.
The way I see it...
It seems like ABC, to save money, is going to collapse its two weaker (in the ratings) shows into one show to save money, but to keep some essance of both shows around. Am I thrilled with the idea? Not really. OLTL and AMC are very different shows. OLTL is more about diverse community and a mixture of high camp and social storylines. AMC is a little more glossy and a lot more camp. It lacks the social edge that OLTL has carried with it over the years. If they are going to collapse both the shows into one show they should rename it at least. It just seems like ABC wants to get out of filming in New York and tighten their daytime schedule. It is cheaper to produce two hours of soap opera than three. If they do the move though, I hope they evanly divide the backstage talent, because AMC sucks at managing a larger cast.
By the by, AMC and OLTL take place in the same universe, and were created by the same person (Agnes Nixon). There was a little joke last year when David Vickers came back as David Vickeroshi. He was walking down the side of a highway and there was a sign that said Llanview 12 miles/Pine Valley 22 Miles (or something like that.)

GH is as weak, or weaker
The very idea breaks my heart
The idea of losing what I think is the best-written/best acted show on TV (daytime OR primetime) literally breaks my heart. Especially the possibility of losing Kish.
I don't like the idea of Kish or any other OLTL character moving over to AMC; the latter program is pretty dreadful and, as others have stated, I doubt Chuck Pratt would even bother to do anything with these characters. (A similar thing happened when Another World was cancelled: several characters from that show moved over to ATWT, but were gone within a few years, their characters badly or under-used.)
I've heard the rumors that ABC Daytime VP Brian Frons favors AMC and GH over OLTL, which is sad, considering how vastly superior OLTL is to either show. But OLTL is the only one of the three that consistantly comes in under budget and actually makes money, so to cancel it (especially when you realize it gets better ratings than the prime-time soap Melrose Place) seems silly to me.
But if it must go, I'd rather 2 options occur with Kish:
1. They disappear with the show: Fish and Kyle together, raising Stacy's baby. And Scott Evans and Brett Claywell have the talent to go on to bigger and better things in prime-time TV or film.
2. Why doesn't ABC, which partly owns all three of their daytime soaps, spin the gay characters from these soaps into their own gay-oriented soap opera, which could air late nights on SoapNet or even licensed to Logo? Say, have Fish, Kyle and Nick move to, oh, Philadelphia, as well as Bianca (from AMC) and Lucas (from GH), maybe bring back Billy Douglas as an adult, and even have certain characters from the OLTL/AMC/GH universe pop in from time to time, such as Cristian, Layla, Stacy and Téa from OLTL, Erica from AMC and Bobbie from GH. And have Ron Carlivati or Sri Rao (GH: Night Shift) write it.
This is not good news
If they decide to cancel the show, at least give them the time to wrap up the stories logically and to the satisfaction of the fans.
I've been watching just for Kish. I seriously ff thru anything that doesn't involve them, unless a hotties has his shirt off. Then I slow down for a minute or two.
Let's hope they do right by Kish if this news is true.
