Guess What "Hung"'s Thomas Jane Won't Be Putting in His Mouth

Thomas Jane

HBO's dramedy Hung is set to return next month and while it will include Stephen Amell playing an "anything goes" gigolo, don't expect Ray Drecker to be following suit. Actually, that isn't much of a surprise given that Thomas Jane, who plays Drecker hasn't been shy about expressing his unwillingness to have his character do anything gay.

But Jane decided to reemphasize that point while attending the John Varvatos Fashion's Night Out, telling New York Magazine's Vulture, "I told HBO, the year I end up with a penis in my mouth is the last year of the show. That's the last episode. If they want to keep me around, there's certain guidelines they have to follow. Not all of us can be bloodsucking vampires. That's not all they're sucking, you know! Sorry!"

The new season of Hung will see Ray get involved with a pre-op transgender woman, but even those scenes gave Jane the vapors. Series creator Collette Burson told TVGuide.com that when Jane first heard about the storyline "...the idea of kissing a man was not a comfortable one for him, but he did great."

Um, Jane wasn't kissing a man, but that distinction is probably lost on these folks.

Jane also told TVGuide.com that when he first met transgender actress Jamie Clayton, he arrived on set and "I asked, 'So where's the guy?' and was told, 'That's her!' There was this beautiful girl who blew me away."

Look, I get not every actor is comfortable with everything they have to do on screen -- portraying abusive parents, rapists, murderers -- but it also seems sad when a man who is supposed to be a professional actor capable of playing a wide range of roles, finds it necessary to continuously express how icky gay sex makes him feel.

It just makes us appreciate the Ewan McGregors, Trevor Donovans, Jake Gyllenhaals and Jim Carreys of the world that much more. Thankfully, there are plenty of other shows on HBO featuring actors with more enlightened attitudes.

Editor's note: HBO just provided AfterElton.com this comment from Hung's creator Collette Burson:

As an actor, Thomas Jane is pretty fearless.  He’s had plenty of sex on film, and gave a bold performance as a sexy gay hustler in “The Velocity of Gary“.  But Ray Drecker is a completely different character -- he isn’t liberal and open-minded, he’s a repressed prostitute from the Midwest. What he is referring to is that once you remove Ray Drecker’s flaws and hang-ups, there’s nowhere left for the show to go.
