Dear "Glee": What You Need to Do to Make Us Keep on Loving You

Glee is back! Well, on Tuesday, September 20th, that is.

We already know some of what we can look forward to on the show's third season: the incorporation of the four winners of The Glee Project into the series, as well as Idina Menzel's highly anticipated return as Rachel's biological mother, Shelby Corcoran, playing a new teacher at McKinley for as many as twelve episodes.

But the third season's biggest change may well be behind the scenes. For the first time ever, the show now has a full-time writing staff, including respected Buffy alum Marti Noxon. Previously, all the episodes had been written by the show's creators, Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan (Murphy and Falchuk also direct most of the episodes).

Even the most die-hard Glee fan will probably agree that the expanded writing staff is a good thing. For all its delights, the show has sometimes lost its focus and has even been outright inconsistent from episode to episode.

Toward that end, we at AfterElton.com have come up with a list of suggestions to make the next season of Glee the best one ever!

Give Us More of Those Big Moments We Love

When most of us think back on our teen years, we tend to remember the "big" moments. For those of us who are still teenagers, we already know that these are the moments we will remember.

Think about how many of these moments that Glee has gotten just right: Quinn imagining her scary life ahead; Karofsky breaking down in front of Kurt and Kurt forgiving him; Santana finally baring her soul to Brittany, only to have Brittany mostly reject her; and (of course) Kurt meeting the "Teenage Dream" that is Blaine.

Glee has always excelled at exactly these moments, which may be why, despite all its outrageous or fantasy elements, it can often feel quite grounded and even – eek! – realistic. So Glee writers? Don't stop believing that these moments can work!

Work on More Consistent Storylines

Individual moments are one thing. One Glee criticism that almost everyone seems to agree on is that the overall characters and storylines can sometimes feel inconsistent. Glee already has a lot of storylines – some of which weren't ever resolved, but just sort of petered off when it seemed like the writers got stuck or bored. Finn's paraplegic "best" friend? Jane Addams Academy (and Eve)? Um, Sam?

We know it's hard with a really big cast, but the show needs more focus. Plan storylines in advance and stick with them.

Speaking of that ever-expanding cast, when it comes to the Glee Project winners – four of whom will be incorporated into this season – don't just parachute them all in with sparkling new storylines. Instead, incorporate them into existing ones.

Or better yet, do what you did with Ashley Fink's Lauren (and Mike and Brittany and Santana before her): for a while, they were just in the background. So when they finally stepped forward into the spotlight, it felt natural and organic – oh yeah, just like how things really work in high school!

More Kurt, More Blaine, More Klaine

Some people think that Kurt and Blaine got more than their fair share of screen-time last season. We think these people are nuts!

That said, in the first season, Kurt felt a little creepy-stalker-y at times, and in the second season, it felt like you reacted too much to the criticism of the first season, and he came across a little saintly. Give him back his edge – just don't make him a bitch.

As for "Klaine," remember the prom episode? There was a quick scene where Burt, Finn, and Blaine are watching a game on TV and discussing what their tuxes are going to look like, and then Kurt comes in to show them his kilted tux.

In other words, you had a scene with a straight man, his stepson, and his biological son's boyfriend watching a game together while talking about going to the prom. What's incredibly groundbreaking here is that it wasn't portrayed as incredibly groundbreaking! Everything was a non-issue, because that's just how this family rolls.

And since we brought him up, let's see more of Burt Hummel too.
