Appointment Viewing: VH1 Goes "Behind the Music" with Ricky Martin and ABC Family Starts a "Lying Game"

If it's Friday, it's time to take a look ahead at the coming week's Appointment Viewing. Though we're headed towards the slow part of the summer season, there are a few debuts to anticipate, including a mid-century drama from BBC America, a new lap of The Great Food Truck Race, ABC Family's newest thriller The Lying Game, and the finale of Teen Wolf.

Syfy's Haven takes an interesting turn this week when it starts telling a story through Twitter. The story in the companion episodes will follow newsmen Vince (@VinceHaven) and Dave (@DaveHaven) as they sign up to Twitter to promote their newspaper. In the process, they end up encountering a mysterious user (@ColdinHaven) who knows a lot about the mysterious town. The story can also be followed via the #HavenNews hashtag.

I'm always a sucker for attempts to challenge how one can tell a story (I might have discussed that earlier) so I've signed up to follow Dave and Vince. But there are a number of practical challenges -- i.e. how do you maximize the interactivity while also avoid spoiling the show for West Coast fans? How do you walk the line between making viewers want to follow the story on Twitter and frustrating viewers who aren't interested in the social media aspect? I can't wait to see how this goes.

Meanwhile, IFC has a new episode of Rhett & Link: Commercial Kings that sees Link get buried alive in a cardboard coffin in the name of making a better commercial. Yikes. And I thought letting the cameras roll while they got colonics counted as going the extra mile. In addition to working with the environmentally-friendly funeral parlor that supplies that cardboard coffin, they'll also be creating an ad for a trash hauler who has a pet mule.

IFC also has a new Whisker Wars, but due to some recent family issues I haven't had the chance to check it out yet. Does anyone have any reactions they want to share? Do you think this is a show worth keeping up with?

Starz also has a new Torchwood, while the Cartoon Network has more of the revamped ThunderCats and G4 has two more episodes of Warren Ellis' anime take on Iron Man and Wolverine.

We've got a couple weeks before BBC America is set to return to the new season of Doctor Who, and the channel is getting fans ready with a trio of specials. The first one is a "Best of the Doctor" special that will feature highlights from Matt Smith's run.

I may be new to Doctor Who (thanks Russell T Davies and John Barrowman!), but I always feel a mix of anxiety and excitement over the arrival of a new Doctor. I get so comfortable with the previous one, and yet there are so many unexplored possibilities when a new Doctor debuts. Smith has been another great actor in the role, and I hope the special tackles how he's added his own touches while also giving us moments that recall David Tennant's turn on the show.

There's also a new installment of the Ministry of Laughs, with a new Graham Norton Show and a new Friday Night Dinner.

Doomsday Prophecy's Jewel Saite and AJ Buckley.

Meanwhile, Syfy has another camptastic original movie on Saturday with Doomsday Prophecy. This one stars Jewel Staite as an archeologist who teams up with an editor (AJ Buckley, one of the Ghostfacers on Supernatural) to find an author whose novels have anticipated real-life disasters. As much as I love the premise, the desire to see Kaylee again is really what's compelling me to watch.

Not only does Biography's Celebrity Close Calls have a couple of gay faves on Saturday, but also an actual gay man. In this week's episode Greg Lougainis discusses a suicide attempt, Pam Grier remembers getting mugged in Denver and Morgan Fairchild talks about the time she was abducted. On the down side, there's also a story from Scott Baio, whose recent online behavior has left me wanting to avoid anything he does. I guess that's why the fast forward button exists.

Finally, HGTV has new episodes of Curb Appeal: The Block with John Gidding and Color Splash with David Bromstad, while WE sees Vinny meet up with his mentor in a new Staten Island Cakes.
