"EastEnders" Video Update: And Baby Makes Three – Err, Four

Will Christian and Syed have the baby at least one of them wants?

Back when Gays Of Our Lives was weekly, EastEnders was one of our main features as the soap was deep in the midst of a love triangle between Christian Clarke, Syed Masood and Syed’s wife, Amira. But since then, Amira discovered that her husband was gay and left town and Christian and Syed, after more than a year long courtship, finally united and moved in together.

Then the couple promptly vanished, not appearing on screen for months at a time.

Recently, however, the two began a new storyline in which Christian and Syed discussed the possibility of having children, an idea that immediately put them at odds.

I’m not a fan of story-lines with gays having babies. Don’t get me wrong, I am not against gay men having children if that’s what they want. But it never seems to go well for our favorite TV gay couples and a compelling story never seems to come from it. It ruined Scotty and Kevin on Brothers & Sisters, though they were already becoming tired and dull, but the baby storyline finished them for me. Ditto Christian and Olli on Forbidden Love. Their baby storyline is not only boring, but it has made one of soapdom’s hottest gay couples sexless and inert. It’s really a chore to watch either of them. Will Christian and Syed be any different?

Will Christian and Syed survive their decision to have a baby?

Longtime readers know that I’ve never been the biggest fan of Christian and Syed. Granted, the couple has amazing chemistry and John Partridge and Marc Elliot are two very talented actors. But their storyline has always been more about shock value and going for the big moments rather than trying to tell a fleshed out, emotionally rich tale. Moreover, Christian and Syed’s relationship never made much sense to me because beyond the chemistry, I’ve always found these two to be incredibly mismatched. Many times I was left wondering why Christian puts up with all the drama Syed brings to his life. I’m still wondering that.

Christian and Syed debate having a child. Sort of.

As for the storyline, I really wish the show had of bothered to give us some insight as to where Christian’s desire to have a baby came from, or at least have him express why it’s so important.
