GOOL THEATER

Hollyoaks

I’ve spent so much time praising Hollyoaks from week to week that I’ve been ignoring some things that has bothering me about this show. So this week I’m going to get into that, but first, let’s check out this week’s clip.

Rae losing her baby was no shock to me. I said weeks ago there’s no way she’d ever give birth, not with Ste's new love interest Noah on the horizon. And since I find Rae to be a terribly dull character, I’m hoping that she disappears from Ste’s storyline altogether now. Ste and Brendan have enough drama in their relationship, and she’s an unneeded distraction. Sadly, since she’s conveniently living with Noah and Ste is to become involved with him, she’ll probably still be part of Ste’s life. Oh well.

BTW, I think the way Noah’s introduction to Ste was really badly played. Rae just moves in with Noah and two other guys she doesn’t know when she has friends and relatives in town? We didn’t even get a formal introduction between Ste and Noah, they just already seemed to know each other. Not exactly the basis for a steamy romance. And the fact that thus far, Noah and Ste have absolutely no chemistry doesn’t help.

So far Ste and Noah aren’t lighting the world on fire…

Hopefully, that might change as they spend more time together and we see them in additional scenes. As it stands right now, it feels like the introduction of Noah is meant to function only as an obstacle to Ste and Brendan’s relationship and not as a viable alternate love interest, which is what Ste really needs. For what it's worth, I like Noah as a character in and of himself, so I hope that changes.

So what’s my big gripe this week? How come no one has noticed that Danny Houston, the guy Brendan murdered, just up and vanished? He was a powerful mobster in town and lived in a big mansion, IIRC. So wouldn’t someone wonder why he just disappeared, perhaps even the police who were investigating his crimes?

Or how about Cheryl, who was his business partner and old friend? She hasn’t even mentioned the guy. I know the show is simply letting this lie until they are ready to deal with Brendan having murdered him, but it’s so unreal that he could just vanish and there would be no mention of it. But that’s this show’s typical poor storytelling. Why deal with unnecessary details when you don’t have to? Even if it makes no sense.
