GOOL Theater: Jackson’s Tragic Death Only The Beginning For Aaron on “Emmerdale”

Welcome to the latest edition of GOOL Theater! This week we’ve got clips and commentary on Forbidden Love, People of the Valley, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks.

Forbidden Love

Christian and Olli continue to fight as their marriage falls apart following Christian’s infidelity with trashy Jessica. And while things are pretty bad, it looks like they are about to get worse…

When did Olli get so mean and bitchy? He’s always been childish and petulant, but this is just too much. Letting Jessica move into his home and then throwing it in Christian’s face was bad enough, but I simply couldn’t believe Olli would treat his friends so poorly and show such a complete lack of feeling and empathy for their problems and concerns regarding Jessica. The Olli I remember was always kind and compassionate. He would never stand by and let his friends’ relationship fall apart if he could do something about it. I really think the show risks ruining Olli as a character by making him so selfish and vindictive.

But it’s not just Olli. Jessica is badly written as well. She’s not subtle about her odious actions, and folks just let her wreak havoc for no good reason when they should just show her the door.

I love a good villain, but good villains are clever, and they fool their victims. Jessica only succeeds because the people around her act like complete idiots and lose every brain cell they have.

At least Christian continues to make sense, even if the show and the characters refuse to address why Christian sleeps with a woman every time he and Olli have problems. Delving into that might be more interesting than anything we’re getting now.

It is rather frustrating that this show again uses a scheming, trashy woman to come between this couple. First Rebecca and now Jessica. It’s not just repetitive, it’s boring. And so are these women.

When it comes right down to it, this is such bad soap opera. It’s bad writing, bad storytelling, and I don’t even think the actors are buying this awful, awful material. When Christian and Olli’s legion of fans begged for a story for this much beloved couple, I don’t think this is what they had in mind.

Hollyoaks

I haven’t been watching much Hollyoaks lately. Brendan, Ste and Noah have been absent for weeks (again) and I think the rest of the show is on a major creative downturn. But when I saw that the show was going to give transgendered gay Jason a little story arc, I thought I’d check it out.

The one thing that strikes me about this is not so much the story itself, but how the viewers have difficulty grasping exactly who Jason is. Many viewers can’t process the idea a transgendered gay teen. Kudos to the show for detailing it so matter of fact in terms of what Jason wants and how he feels.

The fact that so many viewers can’t comprehend this situation is probably why it’s a good idea the storyline is being told. And on that note, I thought it was interesting that Jason hadn’t yet told his parents that he, in essence, was a gay man because they wouldn’t understand and had already had enough to absorb this past year. I can’t wait until that particular bombshell is dropped.

When will the show wrap up its serial killer storyline?

I like that Jason is trying to get out there and meet guys and the scene with Andy was cute. And I liked that Jason was excited at the prospect of being able to live as a gay male one day, though I find it hard to believe that Andy couldn’t look at Jason and tell he was biologically a girl.
