As The World Turns

I wasn’t a bit surprised by Luke and Reid’s decision to put off sex until Luke was ready. It’s actually in Luke’s character to be nervous and hesitant about taking on a new lover. Unlike every other soap character that ever existed, including priests and nuns, Luke has always treated sex like it was a sacred act.

But let’s face it, the reason Luke is being written this way is not about character, but because of the show’s desire to avoid gay sex. And that knowledge puts a taint on what could be viable psychological underpinnings of a character. But at least they are kissing again – and it was a very nice kiss at that.

It’s also a problem because Luke and Reid are only discussing this now. They’ve been dating exclusively for months and were romantically involved even before that. And they’ve already nearly slept together. So this is a conversation they should have had a long time ago and dealt with the situation then.

Furthermore, it’s hard for me to believe that Reid, not a patient man by his own admission, has waited this long. That is out of character. And I hope that aspect is addressed soon. Or better yet, they could just have sex and be done with it.

The one really good thing last week was seeing Reid sparring with someone other than Luke. It is fun to watch this snarky character mix it up with Oakdale’s citizens, and Eric Sheffer Stevens (and Van Hansis for that matter) are far too talented to be trapped in the gay bubble simply playing Luke's boyfriend..

I really liked Reid’s scenes with Chris in particular. I think the characters and the actors spark well off each other. I only wish the show had played more with the rivalry between Chris and Reid in the time that we had.
