Botineras

Ouch! That was my reaction when poor Lalo got the hammer brought down on his leg. I’ve never cared for the character, but I have to admit I felt sorry for him after that happened. I guess that’s the end of a career built on scheming and screwing people over.

Heh. I guess I don’t feel that sorry for him. Okay, okay. Even he didn’t deserve that.

But as the show comes to an end it looks like Lalo and Manuel are headed for a happy ending outside of sports. That’s good for their fans, but it’s also a shame they couldn’t let them be openly gay and yet stay in the profession they both love. It might be a bit of a fantasy ending, but a truly happy one for the characters, I think.

Here is hoping an American show eventually decides to tackle the topic as there are certainly closeted professional athletes in the U.S. and the subject is more than topical. Kudos to Botineras for mostly doing a good job with this story, and especially for not treating the gay characters as eunuchs with a romantic or sexual life.

*THANKS TO EMSOL FOR THE CLIPS!

Secret Life Of The American Teenager

When did Griffin and Peter become boyfriends? Didn’t they have one blind date and then see each other at the party? And now they’re boyfriends? Not only that, they’re boyfriends who don’t touch each other and don’t have sex? I just can’t buy this sort of nonsense.

It’s been awhile since I was a teenage boy, but the one thing I remember is being very curious about sex. I couldn’t wait for ‘it’ to happen. And I didn’t have an uber hot boyfriend like Griffin who wanted to have sex with me! I’m sorry, but you put two hot gay male teens together and they’re going to want to have sex. It’s unreal that they don’t.

Teen boys this cute do not avoid sex. Neither do not so cute ones…

I’m weary of gay characters, at least those on U.S. television, being written as sexless eunuchs. Men of any sexual orientation just don’t behave that way. And I don’t think viewers buy it either.

The thing is, we don’t have to see them rolling around in the sack (though I wouldn’t complain). But at least let viewers know they’re having sex like everyone else. And on a show where everybody else can’t wait to jump into bed, it is really glaring and sends a bad message that the two gay characters are not only not having sex, but actively avoiding it.
