GOOL THEATER

Good Times, Bad Times

I stopped covering the Dutch version of Good Times, Bad Times earlier this year after the show told one too many boring and badly told storylines, and refused to give gay Lucas a romance, except for a brief liaison with Marco, who turned out to be a serial killer! But things are looking up with the new season now that they've brought on Edwin, who is slated to be Lucas’ new beau.

It won’t be easy for Lucas and Edwin. Starting off, Edwin is still in the closet and hasn't acknowledged any feelings for Lucas – or even that he might be gay. But as we see in this clip, that won’t be the only problem the boys have to deal with.

It’s been a long time since I actually looked forward to seeing this show, and I find myself anxious to see what happens next with Lucas and Edwin. The actors do have a nice chemistry, even though they are very different personality types. Regular readers know I have never been a big fan of Lucas – and he still annoys me to no end – but I love the sweet and adorable Edwin. Perhaps Edwin can have a positive effect on Lucas and make him a more appealing character.

Will Lucas’ dreams about Edwin come true?

As for the murder mystery, it’s interesting enough, but let’s hope it doesn’t drag on for too long. Though on this show things usually move at a brisk clip, so I don’t think that’s going to be anything to worry about.

As for the killer, I think I know who it is. Not because the show actually gave any clues, but as far as I can tell there’s only one character that could be lifted from the canvas and not have it affect any of the show’s other ongoing stories. That would be Laura’s grandson. I guess we’ll find out soon enough. As long as it’s not Edwin, I’ll be satisfied.

I guess if I did have a caveat about the upcoming story, it's that we’ll have yet another coming out drama when Edwin finally deals with his feelings. I guess when you’ve watched as many soaps and TV shows with gay folks as I have, you get kind of tired of that story. But real life keeps proving that we can never have enough sympathetic portrayals of characters struggling with their sexuality.
