The Week in Gay TV: MTV Brings Back "Teen Wolf" and PBS Asks What it Means to Be "Out in America"

It's time again to take a look at The Week in Gay TV, your guide to the shows who will be battling for your attention and space on your DVR. We saw a few summer shows debut last week and the summer season gets going this week as more shows join the schedule. That includes the debut of MTV's new Teen Wolf remake as well as the returns of White Collar and Covert Affairs.

Current takes another look at the week in media Friday with a new infoMania featuring a new "Viral Video" film school, an interview with Daily Show alum Rob Corddry as well as a new "That's Gay" that takes on the recent use of the F-word (you know which one) at NBA games. Considering the recent news, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Safi keeps up the "That's Gay" segments for the next few weeks.

At the very least, I hope to hear his take on that Fox News roundtable where they blamed Sesame Street for a gay student getting voted prom queen.

Meanwhile, NBC has a new Friday Night Lights as Vince's actions continue to challenge Coach Taylor's grip on the team.

After making us wait between halves of a two-part story, BBC America finishes the story of 'gangers, solar flares and too many Doctors in a new Doctor Who. I usually hold back on watching two-part episodes until both episodes have aired, so I can't wait to see if Doctor Who's doppelgangers are anywhere as fun as Buffy's.

That's followed by a new episode of The Graham Norton Show with Hangover stars Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms, along with Rob Lowe and singer Aloe Blacc. Graham often brings up his guests' early careers and I can't decide if I'm hoping that means bringing up Wet, Hot American Summer to Cooper, The Daily Show to Helms, Lowe's himbo movie roles from the 80s, or any combination of the three.

Finally, Logo has a new Pretty Hurts which sees how Rand struggles with time management, which I guess we're supposed to find ironic since his clients want him to freeze time for them.

Teen Wolf's Tyler Posey makes a bid for AfterElton readers' attention by demonstrating an aversion to shirts.

A classic monster comedy movie gets turned into a teen horror series Sunday when MTV debuts its version of Teen Wolf. From the sounds of things, we're going to see lycanthropy as a metaphor for puberty, what with the body changes, new urges and confusion about it all, as opposed to the silliness of the Michael J. Fox movie. Hopefully, Teen Wolf's transition from comedy movie to TV drama with plenty of teen angst will be as smooth as when Buffy made a similar transition.

Teen Wolf also includes a gay character, with Keahu Kahuanui playing Danny, an out gay teen (with a boyfriend) who is the best friend of the Teen Wolf's main rival and will appear in at least half of this season's episodes.

Every time I hear about a new supernatural soap, I wonder if this will be where it starts to feel like we've seen enough of these shows. However, so far, each new show has managed to find its own unique voice. I hope that continues with Teen Wolf.

Leading into Teen Wolf is The 2011 MTV Movie Awards. This year, Jason Sudeikis hosts the ceremony, which will feature performances by Lupe Fiasco, Trey Songz and more. There's usually at least one moment from the ceremony that drives the water-cooler talk the next day— remember Bruno's dive into Eminem — and I'm interested in seeing if Black Swan's Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis can join the list of same-sex pairings to win the Best Kiss trophy.

Sunday also brings a new Game of Thrones, and it sounds like the kingdoms will be moving even closer to war as the allies of the Stark and Lannister families react to Ned's arrest. I sure hope the Starks have allies able to play the game of thrones better than Ned can, because if that's they best they can do, this is going to be a very short and dull civil war.

Finally, Sunday has a new In Plain Sight on USA that sees Mary deal with an unrepentant con man. This sounds like the kind of client who will bring out her grumpy, snarky side.
