The Week in Gay TV: "Smallville"'s closing act, Vanessa Williams moves to Wisteria Lane and Brittany meets Britney on "Glee"

Welcome to a new edition of The Week in Gay TV, your guide to the shows battling for space on your DVR as the new fall season gets going. We saw most new and returning series last week, but this week has a few more debuts including a triple treat for gay scifi fans — Smallville, Supernatural and the new superhero drama No Ordinary Family.

This weekend sees the debut of The CW’s new Friday night line-up and it’s a double-feature of gay-fav series, starting with the show that gave us Hoyay, Smallville. The show's not planning to go out with a whimper as it tackles a corner of the DC Universe that the series hasn’t visited before — Jack Kirby’s New Gods. Even better, before the series wraps up this final season, we’ll finally get to see Tom Welling wear those emblematic red and blue tights one time.

This season will also look to wrap up other loose ends, which means plenty of characters from the past are expected to return including Lionel Luthor (out actor John Glover), Supergirl (who’s started wearing a brunette wig and calling herself Linda Danvers), Hawkman and Aquaman. I can’t imagine how The CW will handle losing so much silly fun.

Sam and Dean know a few things about hoyay themselves...

Following Smallville, Supernatural makes its Friday debut. Last season ended with the Apocalypse averted, but at the cost of Sam and Adam being sucked into Hell. We saw that Sam’s end didn’t stick, however, as he was checking up on Dean’s newfound domestic bliss. It’s a new beginning for Supernatural and this time it’s Sam coming to stop Dean from enjoying a life away from hunting.

There’s one other Friday debut as CBS’ adds cop drama Blue Bloods. There’s nothing particularly gay about it but with Rob Estes, Donnie Walhberg and Tom Selleck, it certainly helps make Friday night TV good looking.

Here's where you make a tough choice.

Jack Wagner, a timeless type of sexy

Saturday brings a new Logo Documentary with Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon. The film looks at the early star of gay adult films. His butch image created a sensation among the gay community, which was only just learning to accept their sexuality. Despite firmly identifying as gay, he crossed over into straight films and eventually met singer Margaret Whiting, who he eventually married.

I’m usually a fan of documentaries about the sexual revolution and the days when the line between art films and adult films was much blurrier and the industry was motivated by a desire to subvert oppressive societal roles instead of pursuing a profit. Mix in an examination of the gay community’s attitude towards masculinity with Wrangler’s sexual fluidity and this sounds like an amazing story to examine.

The SyFy channel is also debuting a new movie as the latest SyFy Original Movie is Sharktopus, a “super-weapon” developed for the navy which has the jaws of a shark and the tentacles of an octopus. It also can survive out of water, according to the trailer.

I hope so much cheese didn’t leave you with a stomach ache.

NBC also brings a new season of Saturday Night Live with Amy Poehler guest hosting the debut. The bad news? The musical guest is Katy Petty. At least, I can hope she does something to earn more mockery from Danielle Fishel on The Dish.
