The Week in Gay TV: Zombies Make the “Big Brother” House a “Dead Set” and “1 Girl” Talks With “5 Gays”

Welcome to another edition of The Week in Gay TV, a look at the shows battling for space on your DVR in the week ahead. We’re getting closer to Halloween, which means we’ll be getting to see some of our favorite characters in costume.

This week also brings a number of new series to check out including the arrival of UK zombie series Dead Set, a new search for the next West End stage star on I’ll Do Anything, a new run of In Treatment and Canadian talk show 1 Girl, 5 Gays.

Some times I wonder if Smallville determines which aspect of the DC Universe it will dramatize next based on its potential appeal to gay comic fans with gay-fav concepts lsuch as The Legion, The Wonder Twins, Zatanna and Amanda Waller. I’m not sure if anything beats this week’s episode which sees Lois take on a superpowered identity — Isis!

The transformation happens when Lois accidentally activates an ancient artifact, which leaves her possessed by the Egyptian goddess, a story that reminds me of the wonderfully campy silver age stories of Lois. Plus, we should see Clark and Oliver discuss their relationship after Clark discovers how mopey Oliver got without a supportive call from him. Ah it’s good to see that Smallville hasn’t forgotten it’s hoyay roots.

I'll give you handsome and moody, but at least I don't sparkle.

After Smallville, Friday’s Supernatural sees the Winchester brothers battle vampires in an episode that, from the looks of things, will take on the massive Twilight franchise. The story sees Sam and Dean looking into the deaths of some young women, an investigation that leads to the Winchesters witnessing a same-sex kiss and Dean getting turned into a vampire.

Supernatural has previously mocked a variety of targets ranging from Criss Angel to obsessive fandoms to Paris Hilton, but in doing so usually manages to deliver a funny episode that does more than lighten the tone of the season. Having Dean turn into a vampire this time gives Supernatural a chance to show its self-aware enough to realize it sometimes pushes the same brooding, cute guy buttons that Twilight does.

Friday also sees 80s hunk Gregory Harrison on CSI: NY as a powerful attorney who loses some jewelry in a robbery, as well as a new episode of Law & Order: UK. Finally, while there’s no sign of Riley or Zane on Friday’s Degrassi, we do get to see Claire rebel against the school dress code after her date at a Chuck Palahniuk reading, which is just gay enough to warrant a mention.
