Langford on Soaps: Christian and Olli Heat up "Forbidden Love!"

LANGFORD'S PICKS AND PANS

Maryada

I haven’t seen this show lately, so it was nice to catch this latest episode of the ongoing drama revolving around ex-boyfriends Guarav and Karan. I'm so glad to see this story continue, especially given that this is a place and a world not used to gay storytelling, at least depicted positively. I would love to know how Indian audiences are reacting to the story. If any readers might know I'd like to hear from you by either dropping me a line or commenting at the end of this column.

Back to the story, I know this is a totally cultural thing and the style of this soap, but I couldn’t help but chuckle when Karan’s mother cried about wishing she'd died before seeing her son brought home drunk. It might have been the highlight of the episode, besides watching Guarav looking so angsty and gorgeous.

Oh and I loved how Karan’s mother vowed revenge on Gaurav’s family, her eyebrows arching and nostrils flaring. It was like seeing Dynasty's Alexis Carrington vowing to destroy Blake Carrington all over again. There’s nothing like old school over the top soap opera to keep my interest.

Gaurav looks upset… and beautiful…

People of the Valley

I’m actually kind of torn about this clip. It’s so nice to see Iolo in a storyline of his own that doesn’t involve his supporting his family. Moreover, these types of everyday, slice-of-life arcs are the kind of stories that make People of the Valley more real and relatable than most other soaps. It’s one of the things I’ve always liked about this show. I think Colin and Iolo are very funny together and the actors have a nice, breezy chemistry.

I’m not sure where this storyline is going, but I’m enjoying it so far. I also loved that scene between Iolo and Macs where they talked and joked with one another. It showed the warmth between them and how close they have become after Iolo helped Macs deal with his rape.

And yet, as much as I’m glad that they’ve got Iolo doing something, I can’t help but want a new romance for him. He hasn’t even been on so much as a date since breaking it off with Alun earlier this year. It’s just not realistic that such a young and attractive guy wouldn’t be dating. Given this show’s history and its handling of gay characters, I’m certain it’s not because they are uncomfortable with depicting Iolo’s love life. And I’m also aware that on this show, characters can go through long stretches between relationships, yet still be heavily involved in stories. Still, I’m hoping with the influx of new characters that seem to be coming on to the show, there will be room for some romance for Iolo. Even if it’s just a fling.
