Langford on Soaps: Will Has His First Gay Kiss on "Days"

LANGFORD'S PICKS AND PANS

Good Times, Bad Times

Even though there are things in the episodes that annoyed me greatly, which I’ll get to, I enjoyed this past week’s GTST.
As a purely soapy storyline, this triangle between Lucas, Ron and Edwin is juicy stuff. However, watching this show has become increasingly frustrating because the writers simply aren’t taking what is merely good and making it great.

I’ve commented before that they are rushing the storyline, and to the show's great detriment. I'm starting to feel as if I'm not watching a full fledged storyline play out, but a series of scenes that hit bullet points and miss getting to the emotional meat of the drama.

However, I did like that it was made clear that it was not the kiss that upset Lucas, but that Edwin has real feelings for Ron, feelings that he is still denying. I was afraid Lucas would go and on about how Edwin kissed someone else, but I love that Lucas is intelligent enough and experienced enough to know that these things happen, especially under such trying circumstances, admitting he can understand how Edwin might seek comfort elsewhere.

I was puzzled by the scene where Edwin eavesdrops on Maxime and Lucas. Yes, that was when Lucas decided to break up with Edwin, but what was the point of having Edwin listening in since it didn't seem to factor into the story? Also, how did Ron find out that Lucas and Edwin broke up? Who would have told him? It’s a little thing, but a question I kept asking myself.

Also, I really wish Lucas wouldn’t listen to Nina and Maxime. Their advice on how he should deal with Edwin was horrible, especially since neither of them know all of the facts and what happened how it happened. And neither of them are exactly someone a person should go to about how to handle your love life. Didn’t Nina continue to date Dex after learning of his role in Lucas’ bashing? I think Lucas needs to talk to someone more level-headed and clear thinking. Noud would be a good choice, especially since he and Lucas are supposedly so close. Besides, I like Noud and the more I can see of him on my screen, the better I like it.

Days of Our Lives

I'm not exactly loving this storyline, but I do think that Chandler Massey is doing a terrific job with the weak material.
Like I've said before, while I've doubted it in the past, he's shown me that he can act, and his performances are about the only thing of merit in this story.

I will say though that Will's discovery of his mother and EJ was well done. The horrified look on Will's face was classic, with his vomiting at the sight a nice touch.

Sami and EJ sleeping together when they did still makes little sense to me, but it's not the first time a soap has used such a plot device, not that it makes it any more palatable. At least the show depicted it as ugly and unpleasant and not a romantic moment. And it plays into the history of the show and gives Will something else to do other than fret about his silly website. For that I will be forever grateful.

I’d find black and white flashbacks to my mom's grief sex creepy too…

I just hope the material will improve as the story moves forward. I don't want weeks and weeks of Will doing little more than glowering at his mother. Since the show is harkening back to Sami witnessing a traumatic event that turned her into a town terror, let's hope we get to see Will doing some dastardly deeds as part of his acting out.
