Max Adler Talks Karofsky's Possibly Bleak Future

Max Adler as Glee's Dave Karofsky

Actor Max Adler plays the closeted and frightening bully Dave Karofsky on Glee. But in real life Adler seems like a sweetheart. We interviewed him a few months ago and came away charmed.

TV Guide has their own Q&A with the actor today, and we learn he has some morbid fears about his character's future:

It's all up to Ryan Murphy. He's already got Blaine and Kurt as out gay people. I don't know if he's going to tackle the real serious aspect of what being closeted can lead someone to. But I've been told the real-life stories of this happening.

With Karofsky, you have no idea. He could join the glee club and sing a big solo as an out, proud guy, or he could go the opposite route and go home and hang himself like many people have done. Imagine that episode, that message.

This is something we'd been thinking about here at AfterElton. It seems like, as a counterpoint to Kurt and Blaine's self-acceptance, the logical Karofsky story arc would have him killing himself. It would certainly powerful — but would that be too dark for Glee?

Thankfully, TV Guide's William Keck tracked down Glee executive producer Brad Falchuk and asked whether fans should be setting up a suicide watch for Karofsky. Said Falchuk...

That really does happen and we do like to pursue storylines that are pulled from the headlines. I can't say it wasn't discussed, but Glee doesn't really feel like the show for that. We like to get dramatic and push things, but that didn't seem the kind of story we wanted to tell.

Whew! Another hint Karofsky's outlook is improving: the April 26th episode will feature Glee's version of Lady Gaga's "Born This Way." And as  Adler told us, "It’s going to have a lot to do with Karofsky and dealing with him and his confusion and where he’s going to go."
