"Degrassi" Recap: Mrs. Stavros Loves Her "Straight," "Hunkz" Magazine-Reading Son

It's been a few months since we last saw Degrassi's gay jock Riley and his boyfriend Zane. But over the past couple of weeks, the show caught up with the twosome, and we thought it time for us to see what's new with Degrassi's current gay student body.

When we last saw him, Riley was trying to live in a glass closet, making romantic gestures to Zane in public, but neither confirming nor denying anything. Then he inadvertently outed himself to the school, and finally came out to the football team in the heat of a stand-by-your-man moment. Fortunately, everything went about as well as it could.

While Riley is now out to his classmates, it turns out he hasn't yet come out to his parents. That looks to be over, however, once Riley's mom walks in to Riley's bedroom to deliver a plateful of snacks and ends up with an eyeful of boy on boy macking.

Mmm, tasty and no calories!

Considering what a struggle it was for Riley to come out to his school, I expected him to try to desperately avoid the topic with his mom. Instead, Riley's reaction is pretty straightforward, deciding it's time they have a discussion about what she saw and what it means.

Not that his determination to be honest makes the conversation any easier. Riley wakes up the next morning with a look of dread on his face, but he brings up Zane when his mom comes up to his room to deliver breakfast.

But mom might not be ready to hear the news. At the mention of Zane, she scolds him for "goofing off" with Zane instead of studying.

Riley's face runs though a variety of reactions in response to this obvious denial. First there's confusion at how "goofing off" could involve tongue. Then, there's the realization of what is really going on here. Finally, Riley starts looking a bit disturbed as he appears to start wondering what his mother meant every other time she used the phrase "goofing off."

Hmm, does mom know I wasn't really taking four showers a day?

Later at school, Zane asks Riley how his talk with his mom went. When Riley explains his mother's reaction, Zane tells him "I guess you have an out. I mean, if you mom wants to pretend like she saw nothing, let her. Come out when you're ready."

Showing how much he's grown, Riley says he doesn't want to keep secrets any longer and wants her to accept the truth. Zane responds, "Then you've got to find a way to help your mom face the facts."
