Project Runway Episode 402 Recap: "I Started Crying"
A couple of things are becoming apparent as I watch the fourth season of Project Runway, which aired its second episode last Wednesday. First, I seem to lack the killer instinct. Not only do I hate seeing the designers criticized and eliminated, I got all upset seeing one of the models eliminated. Second, I either have an eye for fashion or I’m just cosmically in tune with this season’s judges, because for the second week in a row, my favorite design won. Now, back to that hating to see the designers eliminated thing. I really wish all reality competitions were strictly on the basis of merit. I don’t like the backstage stuff, and I don’t care about the interpersonal dynamics of the contestants. But since I don’t rule the universe or even Bravo, I have to cope with what these shows throw at me, and the format of reality TV demands that someone be the designated bad guy. Sometimes that person is an actual jerk. Sometimes they’re just incredibly annoying. And on this season of Project Runway, it’s Elisa who is annoying me. I mean, even before she spit on her dress to imbue it with her essence. On camera. And then admitted it. And then told the judges.
But first, this week’s challenge. It wasn’t too limiting — the designers didn’t have to put their outfits together with “toilet paper and scotch tape,” as AfterElton.com favorite contestant Chris joked. But close. Very close. Since their design had to be retailed for under $40, the raw material could cost no more than $15. I have nail polish that cost more than $15. And why did it have to retail for under forty bucks? That brings us to this week’s special guest judge, actress … I’m sorry, “pop culture and fashion icon”… Sarah Jessica Parker, who has launched a clothing line called “Bitten” that was designed to be both hip and affordable. She was going to select 7 out of the 14 remaining designers to produce their designs, and then the winner of this week’s competition would have his or her design become part of the collection. Everyone squeed their little hearts out when Sarah Jessica walked in. Chris shed a sentimental tear, since it turns out he was actually inspired to move to New York after watching Sex in the City — which only makes me love him more.
Unfortunately, he was so nervous doing his pitch to SJP that his presentation suffered, and he wasn’t one of the chosen designers. I wasn’t able to get much of a look at his sketch, either, despite replaying it a number of times, which kind of bums me out. Neither of the designers who did skirts were chosen. Which is too bad, because while I wasn’t wild about Sweet P’s, I really thought the sketch Kevin (or “Lone Hetero Guy,” as I call him) did look great. It had buttons in the back, which is one of my major fashion obsessions. You go, not-girl!
Kit, the blonde with the black glasses, got chosen for a hip little thigh-length black sweatshirt over leggings. I can’t see anyone other than a rail-thin fashion model wearing it, but the rail-thin fashion model who wore it looked really hot. Submitted by on Sun, 2007-11-25 23:55. |
