"Supernatural" Recap: "How I Met Your Mother"

A classic filler episode, this week feels like Sam’s direct response to Dean’s Amy Pond betrayal earlier this season. So, without further ado…

Open with a man sitting in his apartment. Judging by the place, it seems he is a well-off banker-type guy. Suddenly an unseen assailant pops open the door and walks in with a knife.

And before we can say “look out!” he is thrown all over the place. His hands and feet are hacked off while he’s still alive, and a symbol is carved into his chest. No surprise, but the man bleeds to death.

In the Impala, Dean catches his forty-winks while Sam drives to the scene of crime. Suddenly he wakes up and takes a swig from Bobby’s flask, justifying it to his brother as grief therapy. He is just honoring the guy. So down is Dean that he claims that the case – four men killed in two weeks with their hands and feet cut off – is nothing but a wild goose chase.

But Sam says it’s the only way to keep busy until they get new leads on Dick Roman. I hope so, too.

Lydia, Dean’s work-out partner

At the morgue, semi-drunk Dean and Sam… sorry, agent Smith and his partner, the other agent Smith (their new permanent identities)… chat up with the CSI tech/mortician, a very smart, helpful young man who tells them that the assailant’s DNA was left at almost every crime scene, including the one where a victim bit off a chunk of his attacker, and it isn’t human.

Of course, he is no more shocked about this info than Dean and Sam would be. Red flag?

So, Dean reluctantly admits that “it could be in the general vicinity of the ball-park of our kind of thing” and suggests that Sam should go on ahead to their hotel room and research, while he goes “undercover” at the local bar.

Here he meets a female version of himself, Lydia (Vampire Dairies’ Aunt Jenna, Sara Canning) and somehow manages to get into her pants, by claiming to be a rich, Japanese-speaking investment banker.

Meanwhile, another man is hacked to bits and a symbol is carved into his chest.

Detective Charlene Penn

The next morning, a semi hung-over Dean and Sam arrive at the crime scene run into the lead detective Charlene Penn.

Here, Sam learns that the Victim #2 had a one-night fling, few days before (he was murdered). And Dean realizes he left Bobby’s flask at Lydia’s. He calls her to ask it back, but Lydia disses him off. And we see that she is heavily pregnant!

Seriously, Dean!? Haven’t you heard of this little thing called safe sex?

Soon after Lydia gives birth to a daughter, and names her Emma.

Congrats Dean, it’s a girl!

To know more about the carved symbols, the boys visit an expert, a materialistic Anthropology professor, Mr. Morrison (played by Buffy’s Mayor, Harry Groener) who agrees to help them, but only after the FBI offers him a “suitable remuneration”, i.e. good word with the IRS and help with his maid’s green card.

Of course, Dean is angry they have to “settle,” but Sam reminds they have no other choice since Bobby’s “not here.”

So Dean takes his frustrations out on the fact Lydia hasn’t called yet, which Sam finds extremely funny, considering this is probably the first time “a girl has dumped Dean the morning after”.
