"So You Think You Can Dance" Recap - Christina Applegate Guest Judges

Christina Applegate of Kelly Bundy and Samantha Who fame joined the judging panel last night, and she actually had a bit more dance cred than most guest judges this season, having been nominated for a Tony for the Broadway revival of Sweet Charity. She wound up being a pretty competent judge, although at this point, with only six great dancers left, there's not a lot to actually criticize.

But me, I'm sure I can find something!

Like maybe Lil' C. Oh Lil' C. Can you just not talk and just sit there and be pretty?. Because you sure are pretty. (Or "buck" as you would say). But those inane extended rhymes you do with the highfalutin' adjectives make me want to tear my hair (and your cornrows) out. How I wonder do you keep getting invited back to the judging panel?

Another thing worth complaining about: choreographers that use a lot of gimmicky props.

Last night Dee Caspary had Ricky sporting a pair of chopsticks throughout an entire routine, which forced the poor guy to completely alter the way he dances. That doesn't actually seem fair. Likewise, Sonya Tayeh had Tadd spinning from a chandelier for more than a third of a routine which didn't really show off his dancing ability. (Although it looked sorta cool.)

My favorite performance of the evening was actually the first one: Melanie was paired with All-Star Twitch for a Red Riding Hood hip hop routine from Nappy Tabs. I think this might be the first time Melanie has done hip hop on the show, and she absolutely nailed it. I loved the concept for the piece, the music and Melanie's athleticism was evenly matched by a menacing Twitch.

Napoleon and Tabitha completely redeemed themselves after the implied dressing down they received from Lady Gaga last week for dated soft hip-hop.

The judges really liked Sasha's number with All-Star Kent. Tyce Diorio had them jumping against a giant wall, and it was supposed to be all emotional... but just didn't connect with me. Kent is a great dancer, but Sasha needed someone more imposing to throw her around and make the piece really work. Too bad she wasn't dancing with Neil or Danny Tidwell, etc.

I was thrilled to see Latino spitfire Janette back as an All-Star. (Love her.) She was paired off with Marko and choreographer (and season 2 contestant) Dmitry Chaplin. But the piece was a bit of a stretch for Marko. Said Dmitry, the power of the male dancer in the Paso Doble "comes from the crotch"

Said Christina Applegate, maybe you should have been dancing it a few inches further down."

Still, everybody loved Marko's Nolan Miller shoulder pads!

The worst performance of the evening fell to Sasha and Ricky. They got stuck with a "whacking" routine - a type of dance that has you wildly flailing your arms about your head. To me it looked like bad Vogue-ing.

Tonight's results show will announce which two women and which two men will compete in next week's finale, and at this point it's completely up to the voters now.

I'm pretty sure the final two guys are going to be Marko and Tadd. I'm also sure Melanie will be in the finale. The tougher call is who will be the second woman. By all rights it should be Sasha, but last night she underperformed, mostly thanks to that dreadful whacking number.

In contrast, Caitlynn had two crowd pleasing numbers - first a really sexy samba with a bare-chested All-Star Pasha.

Second, she had the night's emotional closing number. Choreographed by Sonya Tayeh the piece had Caitlynn trying to break away from an abusive lover, played by an intense Marko. Gorgeous.

Even though the judges clearly want the finale to be a showdown between "beasts" Melanie and Sasha, I think Sasha has a real chance of going home tonight and Caitlynn squeaking into the finale.

What do you think? Are you excited about next week's top four? Who do you think should win this season?
