"So You Think You Can Dance" Recap - Neil Patrick Harris Guest Judges

Neil Patrick Harris took the guest judge seat last night beside Mary and Nigel. Interestingly there wasn't a fourth choreographer judge to join him as in the previous two weeks. I guess the producers figured Harris had enough gravitas on his own without stacking the judging panel with an expert.

I was struck by how calm and self-assured Harris was. (I guess that's what comes of being crowned Gay Man of the Decade.) Last week, Jesse Tyler Ferguson brought a manic energy to the show. In contrast, Harris seemed to exert a calming influence on the proceedings. I think he even rubbed off on Mary, who was unusually subdued-- even when praising an Argentine Tango, something that would normally put her on full tilt. No whistles, screams or tamale trains last night!

And that's a bit of a surprise because there were a lot of great performances. In fact, I can only think of one real clunker in the bunch: Tyce Diorio's "Come Fly With Me" Broadway routine for Mitchell and All-Star Melody. I hated everything about it, particularly the nails on a chalkboard music.

Said Harris of the piece: "Um, I didn't get that much at all.... It all seemed very disjointed and not incredibly thought out."

Pretty harsh for a celebrity judge. He actually good booed! But hey, Harris was spot on. (Although it was more a criticism for the choreographer than it was for Mitchell.)

The highlight performance for me was Caitlynn and All-Star Pasha's Argentine Tango. Smokin' hot. I loves me some Pasha, but Caitlynn totally kept up with him.

But almost equally good was Jordan and All-Star Brandon's contemporary routine from choreographers Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson. It was gorgeous.

My bottom three predictions....

Okay, yay for me! Last week I was spot on forecasting which couples would be in the bottom three and who would ultimately go home. But this week might be tougher to call.

The women aren't that hard to peg: I think Melanie and a suddenly surging Caitlynn are probably safe. That puts Sasha, Jordan and Clarice in the bottom three, and I'm fairly confident that Clarice will be going home. Her Bollywood routine last night was okay, but she wasn't much of a standout in it. Most people were probably watching All-Star Robert.

As for the men: Mitchell will likely be going home and will certainly be in the bottom three. The remaining men all stack up pretty evenly, so it's anyone's guess which two are safe and which two are in the bottom three with Mitchell.

I'll go with Ricky and Jess safe this week, while Tadd and Marko are dancing for their lives. But not really, because Mitchell is definitely going home.

So, what do you think? Have a different assessment of last night's performances? How did Neil Patrick Harris rate with you as a judge?
