The First Best Picture to Feature a Gay Kiss Was... the First Best Picture!
Still sore over Brokeback Mountain's Best Picture loss to Crash? Yeah? Because you're a decent human being and don't want to get blocked from this site? Well, let me throw a new conspiracy theory at you: The Academy shafted Brokeback because they'd already applauded the gayness of Wings, the first film to win Best Picture back in 1927, and it is gay. The melodramatic war drama, now available on blu ray, is a by-the-book affair, but the two lead actors – Charles "Buddy" Rogers and Richard Arlen – share a tender moment in a climactic sequence. And a kiss! A kiss. It has the weird urgency of a gay high-schooler's first clandestine makeout. Watch it again and again, and take time to notice the suspicion in Clara Bow's teary eyes!
